My father has Alzheimer’s but he’s not that bad yet.
But I do have some experience. When I was a teenager, my grandmother took care of HER mother, who was blind and in a wheelchair (her mind was good). I used to help feed her and take her to the bathroom. Mostly we tried to keep her involved in the conversation by talking to her. She stayed in the dining room unless she was sleeping or using the toilet.
It’s tough. It’s like having a little kid. You can’t go anywhere or do anything that will leave the person alone.
If you contact the Alzheimer’s association they can give you some caregiver training (free) and help you with what they call “respite care” which basically means a mom-sitter.
Your teenagers will HAVE to help with their grandmother and also with the house. I was happy to go to my grandma’s in the summer and hang out with my grandparents and see my great-grandma. All kids aren’t like that.
Good luck. Contact me if you need someone to talk to.
